WHAT ARE THOSE?!: HEARTHS

WHAT ARE HEARTHS? ARE THEY IMPORTANT? ⚒⁣

Thermal features, or hearths, contain the remains of prehistoric campfires or roasting pits! ⁣

They were used for cooking, heating, and the processing of some stone, wood, faunal, and floral resources. ⁣

⚒⁣

Due to most of the items being organic, archaeologists would be able to determine the age of hearths by radiocarbon dating (a scientific process). ⁣

(Carbon dates could be negatively affected if the remains were of old wood or coal, but the process is usually quite reliable.) ⁣
