WHAT ARE HEARTHS? ARE THEY IMPORTANT? ⚒
Thermal features, or hearths, contain the remains of prehistoric campfires or roasting pits!
They were used for cooking, heating, and the processing of some stone, wood, faunal, and floral resources.
⚒
Due to most of the items being organic, archaeologists would be able to determine the age of hearths by radiocarbon dating (a scientific process).
(Carbon dates could be negatively affected if the remains were of old wood or coal, but the process is usually quite reliable.)
